The Knesset is the symbol of the sovereignty of the State of Israel and the manifestation of her democratic nature. The focal point of the Knesset's activities is legislation. The sessions in the Plenum and in the committees cover those issues that currently occupy the Israeli public. In the Knesset, decisions are made which affect and even shape the character of national life.

The Knesset maintains a system of checks and balances on the executive branch, the Government (ministerial cabinet). Knesset Members exercise their right to demand and receive up-to-date information on the Government's work.

The Knesset is a faithful mirror of the Israeli nation. Its distinctive make-up reflects the character of Israeli reality. Representing diverse social strata, ethnic groups and  inorities, the members also stand for the abundantly varying ideologies and world-views found within the society.

The location of elected house of representatives of the State of Israel is in the capital, Jerusalem. The name of this body, the Knesset, indicates the historical connection to the Great Assembly, convened upon the return to Zion from the Babylonian exile.

The current Knesset is the fifteenth in number, and celebrates its 52nd year in 2001. The first Knesset opened at the end of the War of Independence, on the date of the Fifteenth of Shevat ("Tu Bishvat"), 5709 - 14 February, 1949.

The Knesset Web Site serves as a link between the public and its elected representatives. Through this site, one gains an understanding of the Knesset's structure while learning about its history and functioning. The site has a wealth of information through which one can follow the daily activities and decision- making process of the Israeli legislature.
