Dung Gate "Bab El-Magharbeh"

(Map of Wall)
Located in the Southern part of the Wall, it was restorted in 1540 A.D. The official name of Dung Gate is Bab El-Magharbeh, the gate of the Moroccans, since immigrates from North Africa used to live in that part of the city in the 12th century. Another name for this gate is Silwan gate, because it looks over the village of  Silwan. It is also known as the Maghreb Gate.

The small Ottoman arch above the ugly modern lintel shows that the original gate was much smaller, probably a postern. The Jordanians widened it to take motor trafic during the twenty years (1947 - 1967) when Jaffa gate was sealed by a defacto frontier.
