Jaffa Gate "Bab El-Khalil"

(Map of Walls)

Located in the Western Wall, Arabs still call it by its official name, Bab El- Khalil, the Gate of Hebron. The wall between the L-shaped gate and the Citadel was torn down and the moat filled by Ottman sultan Abdul hamid II in 1898 to permit Kaiser Wilhelm II and his suite to ride into the city along the route followed by the present motor road. According to the legend, the two graves behind the wrought-iron fence just inside the gate to the left are those of the architects, who supervised the building of the wall, executed by Suleiman the Magnificant for leaving Mount Zion outside the walls.
